Sustainability
Do you have any tips for my brand to be more sustainable?
Choosing paper boxes for your packaging is a commendable decision, as it demonstrates your commitment to eco-friendliness. Congratulations on taking this important step! Now, let's explore how you can further enhance sustainability in your packaging practices. We have compiled five simple yet effective eco-friendly packaging practices along with practical suggestions for incorporating sustainability into your packaging:
1. Opt for Recyclable Materials: Consider using packaging materials that are easily recyclable, such as paper, cardboard, or biodegradable plastics. These materials can be easily recycled, reducing the environmental impact of your packaging.
2. Minimize Packaging Waste: Evaluate your packaging design and aim to reduce unnecessary waste. Streamline your packaging by using appropriate box sizes and eliminating excessive padding or filler materials. This helps minimize material usage and lowers the overall environmental footprint.
3. Embrace Renewable Resources: Explore packaging materials derived from renewable resources, such as plant-based or recycled materials. These alternatives help conserve natural resources and reduce reliance on non-renewable materials.
4. Promote Reusability: Encourage customers to reuse your packaging by designing it with practical features that prolong its lifespan. Consider incorporating resealable closures or detachable components that can be repurposed. This approach reduces waste and promotes a circular economy.
5. Educate and Inform: Include educational messages or eco-friendly symbols on your packaging to raise awareness about sustainable practices. Inform customers about the recyclability of the packaging materials and provide instructions on proper disposal methods.
By incorporating these eco-friendly packaging practices, you can make a significant difference in reducing your environmental impact. Pergament is committed to supporting your sustainability goals, and we are here to assist you in implementing these practices. Together, we can create packaging solutions that align with your brand values and contribute to a greener future.
How is soy-based ink different from regular ink?
Soy-based ink is derived from soybeans and contains natural additives such as resins and waxes, which contribute to its remarkable eco-friendliness and biodegradability. To be classified as soy-based ink, it must consist of at least 6-40% soy content. In contrast, petroleum-based ink is produced from crude oil. This ink variant is known for its toxicity, flammability, and emission of volatile organic compounds during the drying process. Opting for soy-based ink not only reduces environmental impact but also promotes safer and more sustainable printing practices.
Is your packaging 100% recyclable?
Embracing eco-friendly packaging materials and refraining from lamination allows us to create boxes that are fully recyclable. However, it's important to note that certain rigid boxes necessitate the application of lamination, which involves a thin plastic layer. As a result, the recycling process for such boxes becomes more challenging due to the presence of this plastic component. While we strive to minimize environmental impact, it's crucial to consider the specific requirements and limitations associated with different packaging types.
Is my packaging biodegradable or compostable?
Our packaging exclusively utilizes paper as the primary material. We prioritize sustainability by ensuring that our boxes consist of a minimum of 50% post-consumer content. To further enhance their eco-friendliness, we apply a standard varnish finish, which promotes biodegradability. Additionally, our smaller mailer boxes and folding cartons, free from lamination or additional embellishments such as spot UV or foil stamping, can even be composted at home, contributing to their environmentally-friendly lifecycle.
Is your packaging eco-friendly?
Absolutely! We are committed to using sustainable practices in our production. Our paper-based materials contain a minimum of 50% post-consumer content, ensuring that we contribute to recycling efforts. Furthermore, we prioritize the use of soy-based ink for all our printing needs, which not only reduces environmental impact but also allows for biodegradability. As part of our dedication to reforestation, we even plant trees for every 200 boxes produced, making a positive contribution to our ecosystem. You can find more information about our sustainability initiatives on our website. Please note that while we strive for eco-friendliness, it's important to be aware that if your packaging requires lamination, it will no longer possess the same level of environmental sustainability. Lamination involves the application of a thin plastic layer, which can hinder the recyclability and biodegradability of the packaging.
What's the difference between biodegradable and compostable?
Biodegradable packaging undergoes a natural decomposition process when exposed to microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, as well as sunlight. The timeframe for biodegradation can vary and is not fixed, as it depends on various factors. On the other hand, compostable packaging is designed to break down within a specific timeframe, typically around 90 days, under similar conditions of microorganism activity and sunlight. This faster decomposition period allows compostable packaging to be effectively processed in composting systems and contribute to the creation of nutrient-rich compost.
